7 Days Rwanda Primates and Mount Bisoke Hiking Tour

Detailed Itinerary.

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

After breakfast, you’ll leave Kigali for the lengthy but stunning trip south to Nyungwe National Park. You’ll learn why Rwanda is known as “The Land of 1000 Hills” along the journey. There will be several stops along the way. You’ll travel to Nyanza, where you may see the former Rwandan king’s palace. The Butare National Museum will be your next visit. You will continue through the forest on your route to Nyungwe after lunch. While travelling, you will have the opportunity to witness amusing primates playing alongside the road. You’ll reach your lodging in Nyungwe in time for dinner and a restful night’s sleep.

Accommodation: One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, Ken Berham.

Meals: (Lunch, Dinner).

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking – Colobus Monkey Tracking

You’ll get up early for breakfast before setting off to find Rwanda’s mysterious and threatened chimpanzee population. Although there is no assurance that you will meet chimpanzees on your walk, your Shadows of Africa guide will make every effort to give you a glimpse of our closest animal relatives, as there are only 400 of them in the nation. Even if you are not fortunate enough to see a chimp, you will still have the opportunity to tour the incredibly diverse national park both during your chimp quest in the morning and after lunch.

You will look for the gregarious black and white colobus monkey, another primate resident of the park, in the afternoon. You will enjoy the antics of these playful primates, and their walk is less strenuous than that of the chimpanzees.

Accommodation: One&Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, Ken Berham.

Meals: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 3: Guided Waterfall Hike – Transfer to Lake Kivu.

Your day will begin with either a stroll along the well-known elevated canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park or a guided waterfall hike. Both provide a different viewpoint on this lovely park, and as you make your way through this thick forest, you’ll develop a fresh admiration for Rwanda’s natural beauty. You will travel to Karongi, which is located on the beaches of Lake Kivu, following your morning excursion. You’ll travel through hills and valleys on one of the most picturesque road segments you’ll ever come across on your route to this lovely city.

Trekking through the mountain forest at quite high altitudes can take anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family and the weather. As a result, there is no assurance that your tracking experience will be lengthy or challenging. It is highly advised that people who want to participate in the adventure be in good physical condition.

Once you’ve located the gorillas, you will be given an hour of up-close interaction with them, making it one of the most unforgettable experiences you’ll probably ever have. You will have the honour of being within a few meters of a family of these uncommon and exquisite creatures, witnessing their family dynamics and learning a little bit about each gorilla’s unique personality in peaceful seclusion.

Accommodation: Sambora Kinigi, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Virunga Hotel.

Meals: (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 6: Mount Bisoke Hike – Transfer to Kigali.

The 3,700-meter-high mountain, which is an example of a completely domed volcano, offers a deep crater lake at its summit and is a delightful but strenuous walk. The round trip might take anywhere from five hours to a full day, depending on your fitness level and the number of stops you make. You will pass through a variety of vegetation zones along the trip, from the sparse bushlands at the summit of the mountain to the lush bamboo forest at its base. Porters can be hired to help carry your goods, and a professional guide will be with you at all times. On your walk, you could even be fortunate enough to see some of the park’s resident gorillas.
